*Colossal* is a 2016 black comedy monster movie written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo. The cast includes Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikis, Dan Stevens, Austin Stowell, and Tim Blake Nelson. The story centers on an unemployed writer who, while dealing with alcoholism and a difficult colleague, accidentally causes a giant reptilian creature to appear in Seoul.

The film was an international co-production involving producers from Canada, Spain, the United States, and South Korea. Anne Hathaway joined the project in May 2015, at a time when it had no financial backing. The project was initially described as “Godzilla meets *Lost in Translation*.” Before filming began, Toho sued Voltage Pictures, the film’s producers, for unauthorized use of Godzilla’s image, but a settlement was reached in October 2015. Principal photography started on October 18, 2015, mostly in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, and wrapped on November 25, 2015.

*Colossal* premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2016, and later appeared at several other festivals. It was released in theaters in the United States on April 7, 2017, by Neon; in South Korea on April 20 by Dreamfact Entertainment; in Canada on April 21 by Mongrel Media; and in Spain on June 30 by Versus Entertainment, with a preview on Movistar Estrenos the day before. Critics gave the film positive reviews, praising the acting, direction, screenplay, and themes. Hathaway and Sudeikis received particular acclaim. The movie earned $4.5 million worldwide against a $15 million production budget.

**Plot**

Gloria, an unemployed writer struggling with alcoholism, is kicked out of her New York City apartment by her boyfriend Tim after he grows frustrated with her behavior. She returns to her family home in Mainhead, New Hampshire, where she reconnects with childhood friend Oscar, who now runs his late father’s bar. Oscar welcomes her and offers her a job there.

Working at the bar worsens Gloria’s drinking; she often stays up late with Oscar and his friends Garth and Joel, then sleeps it off at home. Meanwhile, a giant reptilian monster appears in Seoul, causing destruction. Gloria discovers that when she walks through a local playground at exactly 8:05 a.m., she causes the monster to appear and can control it remotely.
